Night Captain Edward Pike was shot and killed while investigating a series of high-profile robberies.
Authorities received a tip that the suspects would be arriving at a location at around midnight to unload some of the stolen items. Captain Pike and a motorcycle patrolman went to 715 South Fourth Avenue just after 10:00 pm and concealed themselves behind a woodshed.
A short time later, a car arrived at the location, and one of the occupants got out and started shining a flashlight around the area. The light shined on Captain Pike, who immediately opened fire on the suspect. The suspect returned fire, striking Captain Pike three times, mortally wounding him. With his weapon emptied, the suspect fled in his car. He was never apprehended.
Captain Pike was taken to McKennan Hospital where he died a short time later.
Night Captain Pike was survived by his wife and six children.

Hopimg that the two officers that lost their lives protecting our citizenry are now memorialized at the Public Safety Center so that we may never forget.
