Correctional Officer Douglas Mashburn was violently stabbed to death by prison inmates as he worked a solo post in the Adult Correctional Facility in Mangilao.
It was learned the inmates did not like the ‘straight worker’ attitude that Officer Mashburn exercised over them. He kept watch over particularly violent criminals, most of whom were serving murder sentences.
Two inmates were charged with Officer Mashburn's murder. A third inmate who was implicated but not charged with his murder was convicted of a federal robbery charge for another offense. On June 20th, 2008, he was involved in the murder of Correctional Officer Jose Rivera of the United States Bureau of Prisons at the United States Penitentiary Atwater in Atwater, California.
Officer Mashburn was a U.S. military veteran. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, father, and siblings.
