Detective Fred Nolan was shot and killed while confronting a suspicious man on St. Germain Street at 1500 hours.
The officer grabbed the man on the shoulder and spun him around. As the man turned he fired a round, fatally wounding Detective Nolan.
The 22-year-old suspect was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life. He was denied parole in 1951.
Detective Nolan had been employed with the St. Cloud Police Department for only three months and was survived by his wife.
