Officer Darrell Moon succumbed to gunshot wounds he received when he was accidentally shot and killed by another officer during a shootout in downtown Fort Worth on July 13, 1980.

Officer Moon was a plainclothes officer working with the Vice Unit. The unit was attempting to arrest three men when they became involved in the shootout at the 1000 block of Houston Street. Officer Moon was struck in the head by a round fired by another officer.

Officer Moon was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he passed away the next day.

Officer Moon had served with the Fort Worth Police Department for six years. He was survived by his wife, parents, and grandmother.
