Sergeant Robert Mondary suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in a search and recovery operation following a bridge collapse over the Great Miami River in Miamitown, Ohio. Three occupied vehicles fell into the river as a result of the collapse.
He had been assigned to supervise search and recovery efforts during a period of excessive heat. His squad searched the river for several days and recovered one body. On June 1st, 1989, while conducting additional recovery work he collapsed. He was transported to a local hospital where he died.
Sergeant Mondary was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office for 21 years. He is survived by his five children, father, and brother.
