Patrolman Monahan died of a gunshot wound he received as he and three other officers investigated a complaint that a disorderly house was being operated on Garden Street in Brooklyn.
As Patrolman Monahan and three other patrolmen were searching and questioning a man in the hallway of the house, the second man drew a gun and fired, striking Patrolman Monahan twice in the abdomen. Patrolman Monahan was taken to Saint Catherine's Hospital where he died 10 days later from his wounds.
The subject fled the house and engaged the other three Patrolmen in a running gun battle. He was able to elude capture. He was was apprehended the two weeks later by detectives and charged with murder. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to prison. While servicing his sentence, the subject was implicated in the murder of Detective James Garvey, who was killed in April of 1934. The suspect was convicted in that murder, and sentenced to death He was executed at Sing Sing Prison in 1942.
Patrolman Monahan assigned to the 14th Division.
