Add to My HeroesMaynard R. Miller
Guard Miller was shot and killed with his own service weapon after being overpowered by two inmates during an escape attempt at the Susquehanna County Jail. Guard Miller was securing the prisoners for the night when he was attacked.
The county sheriff was alerted to the scuffle and when he entered the room he was shot twice and wounded. The two prisoners fled into New York where one of them was arrested approximately two hours later. The second prisoner returned to Susquehanna where he turned himself in. Both, 19 and 22, were charged with murder, jail breaking, and pointing a firearm. They were convicted of second degree and sentenced to 9 to 20 years. One who would have been released in 1979, added years to his sentence when he failed to return to prison after he was given a 48 hour medical leave in 1978.
Guard Miller had previously served as a game protector for the Pennsylvania Game Commission and as police chief for the Clifford Police Department.
