Deputy Maurice Miller was shot and killed when he attempted to serve a summons for non-support at a farmhouse on U.S. Highway 71 in Bossier Parish at 2:00 p.m.
Other officers arrived on the scene, and the subject refused to release the body from the home and surrender, resulting in a stand-off. The suspect then shot and killed Chief Edward Huckabay of the Shreveport Police Department and injured another deputy when they attempted to retrieve the body of Deputy Miller at 4:30 p.m. A gunfight and a stand-off ensued until the suspect was shot and killed by other officers.
Deputy Miller was a United States Army WWII military policeman who had served with the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office for five years and previously served with the Louisiana State Police for two years. He was survived by his wife, son, daughter, and mother.
