Officer McCartney was attacked by a mob of men and women for unknown reasons while on patrol at 14th Street and Clark Avenue.
The mob attacked him with pistols, bricks, and razors. While struggling to protect himself, he was able to shoot and kill one of the suspects. Officer McCartney was seriously injured and succumbed to his wounds 15 days later.
Officer McCartney had been with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department for only two months. He was survived by his wife and three children.
