Captain Hugh McCann succumbed to injuries three days earlier when he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at Roosevelt Boulevard and Rising Sun Avenue. He was directing traffic for a convoy of Army vehicles that rolled through Philadelphia on its way to Fort Dix. He was struck by an auto driven by a man who said he had become confused in the traffic.
Captain McCann had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 28 years. He was survived by his wife, three sons, and five daughters.
