George H. Martin

Patrolman George Martin was shot and killed by a burglar he pursued into an alley near South Street between Bedford Street and East Street in Carlisle.

Around 10:00 p.m., Patrolman Martin was on foot patrol when he recognized a man who had been known to commit burglaries in the area. He proceeded to follow the man down East Street before cutting into the cemetery and walking down Bedford Street to South Street. In an alley off South Street, the subject shot Patrolman Martin.

Many residents witnessed the pursuit on East Street, Bedford Street, and South Street. When they heard gunfire, they followed the fleeing suspect, who ran east and crossed the spring, where his pursuers lost him.

Two days later, the suspect was arrested by police in Winchester, Virginia. He was convicted of first-degree murder and hanged on March 1, 1894.

Patrolman Martin had served with the Carlisle Borough Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and child.
