Officer Manzel was shot and killed by a suspect while investigating a clothing store burglary. Just as he was about to go off duty, Officer Manzel discovered a burglary at a clothing store on 25th Street. During his investigation, he stopped two suspects on the street. While Officer Manzel questioned the two suspects, one of them produced a gun and shot him in the back of the head.
One suspect was arrested and charged with murder. He was acquitted of murder and sentenced to one to 20 years for burglary.
Officer Charles Manzel was working his first shift after returning from a three-year absence to assist in the war effort. He served a total of eight years and was survived by three children.
