Sheriff Thomas Logan was shot and killed while coming to the aid of a saloon matron in Manhattan, Nevada.

The matron was being harassed by a drunk gambler inside. As Sheriff Logan attempted to eject the man from the saloon, the man suddenly pulled out a gun and shot him five times. Although mortally wounded, he was able to subdue the suspect until a deputy arrived at the scene. The suspect was later acquitted.

Sheriff Logan was serving his third term as Sheriff and had served with the Nye County Sheriff's Office for eight years. He was survived by his wife and eight children.

Dear Tom Logan, I am one of your great, great grandsons. Your daughter Amy was my great grandmother. I’ve been to your house in Round Mountain. I’ve been to your office in the Belmont Courthouse. I’ve been to the site in Manhattan, Nevada where the Jewell Saloon once stood where you were shot and killed. I’ve been to your grave in Tonopah. I feel connected to you. I attended a ceremony in your honor when a foot-stone was placed on your grave a few years ago.
I wanted to say Thank you . If it wasn’t for you and the history you left behind I would not have had the opportunity to meet family that I have met in recent years . I’ve learned so much about my heritage. I’m honored to be of your bloodline. I’m grateful to Jackie Boor my distant cousin that wrote the amazing book about you and your life . I look forward to meeting you after.
