Officer Carl LeVin was shot and killed while questioning a man he suspected of having been involved in an arson fire around 5:40 am.
The subject had been located in a vacant house near Amy Lane and Valley Drive in Harker Heights. It is believed that when Officer LeVin asked for identification, the suspect produced a .32 caliber handgun and shot him.
The ensuing investigation determined that the suspect was an escapee from New Mexico and wanted for raping a 3-year-old girl. He had recently been arrested by other Harker Heights officers and had vowed to kill the next officer who arrested him.
The suspect was convicted of Officer LeVin's murder and executed on October 30, 1984.
Officer LeVin had served with the Harker Heights Police Department for 5 years. He was survived by his wife and five children.

View all 32 ReflectionsStopping by the Harker Heights Police Department today, I had the opportunity to read the informational plaque located in the lobby about Officer Carl Levin. Realizing that yesterday made 45 years to the date of his funeral service and the incident that claimed his life, gave me a moment of appreciation to reflect on the serene park in Harker Heights that bears his name. My heart goes out to his family. I am sincerely appreciative to all those that risk their lives day-in and day-out in order to maintain the safety of our community.
