Chief Deputy Sheriff Peter Lantermo was shot and killed during a shootout with two juveniles who had just been chased into Refugio County by Goliad County deputies.
The juvenile suspects bailed out of their stolen car and ran into a field off three miles from Cuero on Highway 39. They exchanged shots with the deputies, and Chief Deputy Lantermo, and one of the suspects were fatally wounded. The other suspect was arrested after trying to commit suicide.
Chief Deputy Lantermo was a United States Army Air Forces WWII veteran and had served with the Refugio County Sheriff's Office for six years. He was survived by his wife and son.
