D'Antonio Andrew Washington

Correctional Officer Tony Washington died the day after being attacked by a prisoner at USP Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia.

He was making his rounds in the maximum security unit when an inmate snuck up behind him and struck him on the head three times with a ball peen hammer. Officer Washington was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was removed from life support the following day.

The prisoner was sentenced to death as a result of Officer Washington's murder. In 2024, President Joseph Biden commuted 37 federal death row inmates, including Officer Washington's killer.

Officer Washington was a United States Army veteran who had served with the United States Department of Justice - Federal Bureau of Prisons for four years and previously served with the South Carolina Department of Corrections for four years. He was survived by his parents and brother.
