Patrolman Michael Kiley was shot and killed when he attempted to arrest a suspect who had just committed a robbery and murder.
Patrolman Kiley was walking his post when he observed a man running from 1049 Fulton Street, Brooklyn. The suspect, along with two other men, had just robbed the location and murdered a man inside. Patrolman Kiley ordered the man to stop and grabbed hold of him. The suspect drew his pistol and shot Patrolman Kiley once in the chest.
The suspect continued to flee and was pursued by another patrolman. The suspect and that patrolman exchanged gunfire until the suspect surrendered.
Patrolman Kiley was able to identify the suspect as his killer before he died from his wounds. The suspect was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to two life terms in Sing Sing Prison.
Patrolman Kiley had served with the New York City Police Department for 24 years and was assigned to the 156th Precinct, the present-day 88th Precinct. He was survived by his wife and two children.
