Sergeant Preston Jones was killed in an automobile crash while responding to another officer's call for assistance at 2:00 a.m.

He was traveling west on Mercer University Drive when he slid into a pole while passing another vehicle at Pio Nono Avenue.

Sergeant Jones had served with the Macon Police Department for seven years. He was survived by his wife, who also served as a patrol officer with the Macon Police Department, two stepsons, mother, father, two sisters, and two brothers. His grandfather retired from the Macon Police Department.
