Inspector Jot Jones was shot and killed after arresting a man suspected of possessing illegal liquor in Mercedes, Hidalgo County, Texas.
He and his partner arrested the man at a dance hall at about midnight, but the subject managed to knock a revolver from Inspector Jones' hand. The man grabbed the weapon from the ground and shot Inspector Jones three times Inspector Jones lived about 15 minutes after the shooting. The other inspector wounded the man, but he managed to escape and is believed to have fled into Mexico.
The subject was a notorious criminal, having served time in prison in Texas or Louisiana for a killing several years prior.
Inspector Jones had served with the United States Customs Service for eight months. He was a widower at the time of his death.
His home was in San Antonio and his body was shipped there for burial in the Mission Burial Park.
