Patrolman Charles T. Jones was shot and killed while attempting to make an arrest at 1733 North Girard Street (present-day Honore Street).
Officer Jones and his partner attempted to arrest offenders wanted for committing several assaults on citizens. The assailants fled and barricaded themselves inside a shed. When the officers made a forced entry, they were brutally attacked. Officer Jones was severely beaten and shot several times. He died as a result of the injuries he sustained.
Eight men were arrested a short time later. One admitted that he shot Officer Jones but said he did so in self-defense. He was tried and acquitted.
Patrolman Jones had served with the Chicago Police Department for over 29 years. He was survived by his wife, six sons, and two daughters.
