Trooper Harold Johnson and Chief of Police Andrew Malloy, of the Lancaster Police Department, were killed when their cruiser was struck by a train while returning from a court hearing in Groveton.
The train was backing up and there were no warnings at the unmarked crossing. A third officer was injured in the accident.
Trooper Johnson had served with the New Hampshire State Police for 24 years. He was survived by his wife, son, and two daughters.
