Assistant Marshal Victor Helburg was shot and killed by a fruit peddler during a licensing dispute.
Marshal Helburg, who also served as Town Clerk and Justice of the Peace, had requested that the man purchase a license to sell goods on the street. The man became upset, pulled out a rifle, and fired two shots. The first shot missed Marshal Helburg but the second struck him in the head, killing him instantly.
The subject fled the scene and was never apprehended.

View all 9 ReflectionsI'm a volunteer with the Boulder Police Department, in Boulder CO. I also write a history column for the Boulder Camera. I'm working on a story on Boulder County officers killed in the line of duty. Since this is Victor Helburg's 100th-year anniversary, I'd like to feature him and would like to correspond with BJ Collins-Boone and any other family members. I'm looking for more info on Helburg, as well as a photo. If you're willing to correspond with me, please email me at pettem@ earthlink.net. Thank you, Silvia Pettem
