Patrolman Robert Hauptman and Detective Francis Dailey were killed in an airplane accident while returning to Morristown Airport following a reconnaissance flight searching for a marijuana crop.

During their return to the airport at 5:20 p.m., the Cessna 150 stalled and then clipped a tree and crashed into the ground at 9 First Street in Florham Park.

Patrolman Hauptman was a United States Air Force veteran and had served with the Florham Park Police Department for one year. He was survived by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
