Police Officer Martin Greiner was shot and mortally wounded as he investigated a complaint of a man discharging a firearm at the corner of Huntingdon Avenue and 27th Street on November 30, 1974, at 2:03 a.m.
As he stepped out of his cruiser, the man shot him twice in the stomach. Other officers arriving on the scene arrested the suspect. Later, as two officers were guarding the suspect, he grabbed one's gun and shot the other. The officer returned fire, hitting the suspect twice.
Officer Greiner was transported to Union Memorial Hospital, where he slipped into a coma and died ten days later.
The suspect had been charged with shooting at another officer in 1972. On May 22, 1975, the suspect, 27, was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder and sentenced to life plus 18 years.
Officer Greiner had served with the Baltimore City Police Department for two years. He was survived by his mother, sister, and grandmother.
