Detective Arthur Oxendine was killed when his patrol car was struck by a hit-and-run driver as he was attempting to pass another car on NC 71 four miles north of Maxton.
The truck that hit him fled the scene. The driver and several occupants were arrested several days later. The driver was charged with manslaughter, felonious hit-and-run, and several other driving offenses. The passengers were charged with being accessories after the fact of a felony.
The 20-year-old driver was convicted of death by vehicle, hit-and-run, driving with a revoked license, and sentenced to 7 years on October 16, 1994. He was released on January 10, 1996.
Detective Oxendine was a United States Army Vietnam War veteran who had served with the Robeson County Sheriff's Office for ten years and had previously served with the Scotland County Sheriff's Office for 15 years. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
