Officer James Gill was accidentally shot and killed when his revolver fell from its holster and discharged when it struck the floor.
The accident occurred inside of the police station at 340 Russell Street.
Officer Gill had served with the Portland Bureau of Police for seven years. He was survived by his wife and young daughter.
