Lieutenant Colonel Harry George succumbed to injuries sustained two months earlier when the Maryland Department of Natural Resources plane crashed near Edgewater, Maryland.

The amphibious plane crashed into a heavily wooded area near the intersection of Pike Ridge Road and Central Avenue shortly after takeoff from Lee Airport.

He was flown to the University of Maryland Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he remained until succumbing to his injuries.

Two other Maryland Department of Natural Resources employees were injured in the accident.

Lieutenant Colonel George had served with the Maryland Natural Resources Police for 25 years and was the chief of the agency's Marine Division. He was survived by his wife and two children.

I remember the morning of the crash so well. I sat on your lap while you sipped your coffee and I snuck bites off your breakfast plate. While pointing to the map on the wall, you told me you were going to take a ride in a plane that day to have a look at 'The Bay'.

I begged you not to go, and can remember how you stood at the door, smiled and said you would be home later to tell me all about it.

Mommom took me to pick peaches, and because I was playing with the CB radio in the old pick-up, it was turned it off to prevent any more disobedience from my four year old self.

We had a nice day at Fike's Orchard and stopped for lunch before heading home. Little did we know officers were looking for us to tell us of the accident. Thanks to me, no one could reach us by CB; we were in McDonald's when a DNR cadet tracked us down.

I will never forget that day, but more importantly I will never forget you! Patient, always smiling, and letting me sit in your lap to eat every meal! God bless you, Poppop! I will always love you and hope I can keep your smile and dedicated spirit going through me and your great-grandchildren.
