Sheriff Theodore Garner was killed in an automobile crash at about 8:00 pm while returning from transporting a juvenile to the State Industrial School in Nashville.
His vehicle left the roadway on Highway 41 one mile from Monteagle and it plunged 100-feet down a steep embankment.
Sheriff Garner had served with the Loudon County Sheriff's Office for one year and had previously served as a Lenoir County constable for 12 years. He was survived by his wife, three daughters, father, two brothers, and four sisters.
