Corrections Officer Mark Avery was beaten to death after he and another officer were attacked in the Lansing Correctional Facility's recreation hall.
The two officers were beaten with barbell plates and a stocking cap filled with pool balls.
Officer Avery was taken to the University of Kansas Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
