Sergeant Delbert Flowers died as a result of being exposed to carbon monoxide inside his 1982 Dodge Diplomat police cruiser due to a faulty ignition switch.
A Penn Township Police Department officer was requested to locate Sergeant Flowers when he failed to respond to dispatchers at about 4:00 am. The officer located him inside the car parked near the borough's maintenance shed on Rettew Lane. A small fire had started near the ignition switch in the car after he had become unconscious.
An autopsy revealed that Sergeant Flowers had died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
