Special Agent Raymond Ezzell was shot and killed in Fort Worth, Texas, while attempting to make an arrest.
At 8:30 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 1931, Agent Ezzell was waiting for a suspect to drive into the alley with a load of liquor. As the suspect arrived, Agent Ezzell walked to the side of the automobile. The suspect fired and wounded Agent Ezzell in the hand.
Agent Ezzell and the suspect shot each other simultaneously. Agent Ezzell shot the suspect in the heart, and the suspect shot him in the head. Agent Ezzell slumped forward, dropping his pistol inside the car. The suspect died at the scene, and Agent Ezzell died at 10:10 p.m. after arrival at the hospital.
Agent Ezzell had served with the Temple City Police Department in 1930 and had been employed as a federal prohibition officer for about 10 months. Survivors include his wife and daughter.
He was reportedly buried in Buckholts in Milam County.
