Deputy Marshal Isaac Evans was shot and killed in Seward, Alaska, while attempting to arrest a man wanted for robbing and murdering a prostitute in Anchorage.
Deputy Marshal Evans located the man in Seward two days after the murder and took him into custody. He took the man to the U.S. Marshal's office in the city to interview him. At the completion of the interview he began walking the man to the adjacent federal jail but allowed him to collect a bundle of clothes he had possessed at the time of his arrest. As they walked to the jail the man pulled out a pistol from the bundle of clothes and shot Deputy Marshal Evans four times.
The man was arrested but escaped from prison in 1940 and was never recaptured.
Deputy Marshal Evans was survived by his wife.
