Chief of Police Harold Enloe was killed in a vehicle crash during a vehicle pursuit that had traveled throughout Asheville.
The patrol car he was in went out of control on the rain-slicked Old Black Mountain Highway (modern-day Swannanoa River Road) 400 yards west of the Sayles Biltmore Bleachery bridge. Chief Enloe was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the crash.
The driver of the vehicle they were pursuing was charged with reckless driving.
Chief Enloe was a United States Navy veteran. He had served with the Asheville Police Department for 14 years and held the position of police chief for just over one year. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He was survived by his wife and son.
The first FOP lodge in the state was named in Chief Enloe's honor.
