Patrolman Elliott is my maternal grandfather. He died when my mother was 11 months old. He had two sons who were 11 and 15 when he died. My grandmother received $9 a month pension from the police dept. When my mother got a little older, she remembered riding a bus from the westside to the police headquarters every month to collect her $5 bill and two $2 bills.
I have been going to the Police Memorial for several years. I am usually the first family member to put a carnation on the wreath or light a candle during the ceremony. No other earlier deceased officers have any one there to represent them.
