Richard Earl Newman, Sr.

Lieutenant Richard Newman was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer during a drug raid at Bossier and Bienville Streets in Layfayette at 11:19 p.m.

Nineteen suspects had already been apprehended. As officers were arresting additional suspects, a struggle ensued. Another officer's gun discharged, striking Lieutenant Newman.

Lieutenant Newman was a United States Army veteran and had served with the Crowley Police Department for 10 years. He is survived by his wife, son, three daughters, and eight grandchildren.
