Michael Earl Greene

Master Trooper Michael Greene was shot and killed when he stopped to question two men he observed urinating along the side of Interstate 65 in Marion County.

Master Trooper Greene learned that both men were wanted for outstanding warrants, and while handcuffing one suspect, the other suspect shot and killed him. One offender was convicted of reckless homicide and has since been released from prison. The shooter was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1995, but while awaiting execution, he died in prison in 2007.

Master Trooper Greene was an Indiana National Guard veteran who had served with the Indiana State Police for over 16½ years and was assigned to the Indianapolis post. Master Trooper Greene was survived by his son and daughter.

In 2008, a Memorial Mile was designated on Interstate 65 in Marion County in his honor.

I was a Senior at Lebanon High School in '93. I remember the funeral for Trooper Greene was held in the high school gym. They allowed students to attend. This was the first police funeral I had attended. I'll never forget seeing one entire side of the gym and the basketball court covered with officers from practically every state in the country. The line of patrol cars in the parking lot seemed endless. This was my first lesson of the brotherhood of law enforcement. Sadly, as a member of the media I have covered dozens of LEO funerals since. It always reminds me of the supreme sacrifice the men and women in blue make, every day. I thank Trooper Greene for standing in the gap that terrible day in 1993.
