Captain George Dooley was shot and killed by an emotionally disturbed person at 519 West 5th Street in Cincinnati.
The shooter had been removed from a mental institution months earlier by his sister, who called that day to report that her brother was armed and threatening to shoot her and himself. Captain Dooley and another patrolman responded as backup. However, the responding officers' patrol car was struck en route, leaving them without assistance. When they arrived at the scene, the suspect shot both officers as they crossed the grounds, and then he barricaded himself in the house.
Captain Dooley was killed instantly, and the patrolman was seriously injured. The suspect was forced from the house with tear gas and killed in a gunfight with police.
Captain Dooley was a United States Army WWI veteran and had served with the Cincinnati Police Department for nearly 30 years. He was survived by his daughter, parents, two sisters, and two brothers.
He is buried at Saint Joseph New Cemetery, Hamilton County, Ohio.
