Deputy Marshal W.F. Deiter succumbed to injuries sustained five days earlier when he was struck on the head with a hammer while conducting a liquor raid in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The suspects who assaulted him were charged with murder.
Deputy Marshal Deiter was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Spanish-American War and served with the United States Department of Justice - United States Marshals Service for 10 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
