Maynard Lynwood Cubbage

Chief of Police Maynard Cubbage was killed when his patrol car was run off the road by a suspect's vehicle during a pursuit along U.S. Route 340, approximately one mile north of the town limits.

Chief Cubbage and Police Officer Penwood Cherrywell attempted to stop the car after it had almost struck another vehicle in the town at about 11:30 pm. As the officers pulled alongside the car, the driver swerved into the right side of the patrol car, causing it to leave the roadway and strike an embankment. They had stopped the same car earlier in the night after suspecting the driver and two friends were drinking.

The driver was arrested several hours after causing the crash and was charged with manslaughter and hit-and-run.

Officer Cherrywell was killed in the line of duty the following year after being appointed the police chief.

Chief Cubbage had served with the Stanley Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife and four children.
