Captain James Clark was killed when his patrol car collided with a Santa Fe Railroad freight train at a double-crossing on Highway 60-84 west of Cannon Air Force Base.
As he entered the crossing his vision was obscured by a barn, house, and tall sunflowers. The patrol struck the passing train and was dragged 142 feet.
Captain Clark had served with the New Mexico State Police for 23 years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, and two sons.
