Patrol Inspector Frank Clark was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend several smugglers near Cordova Island in El Paso, Texas.
As he and other agents confronted the smugglers, several spotters who protected them opened fire from an ambush position, fatally wounding Inspector Clark. One man was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Inspector Clark had served with the United States Border Patrol for six months.
