Detective Carrillo succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained 10 years earlier while making a traffic stop on Court Street. As he was writing the driver a warning the driver shot the officer with a 9 mm handgun. Although wounded, Detective Carrillo followed the suspect and advised dispatch of his situation. While following the suspect Detective Carrillo returned fire just outside of the city limits and fatally struck the suspect.

Detective Carrillo was survived by his wife and two children.
