Chief Deputy Sheriff Claude Hines suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage while struggling with a disorderly prisoner inside the Washita County Jail in Cordell.
He and other officers were attempting to push the man up the stairs when he began to experience symptoms of a stroke.
Chief Deputy Hines had served with the Washita County Sheriff's Office for four years and had served in law enforcement for 17 years. He had previously served with the Greer County Sheriff's Office, Granite Police Department, Darlington Home for drug addicts, and Oklahoma State Penitentiary. He was survived by his wife and four children. One of his daughters was appointed to his vacancy and became the first female law enforcement officer in Washita County.
