Add to My HeroesGeorge W. Kilgore
Night Marshal George Kilgore was shot and killed as he and another officer responded to a burglary in progress at the Boone Cooperage's commissary in West Grenada.
Marshal Kilgore approached the front of the building as the other officer went to the rear. As he approached a broken window a subject inside fired, fatally wounding him. The two suspects fled the scene and the case remained unsolved until the following year.
A mold had been taken from a partially eaten apple that had been left on the commissary floor. A man was arrested and convicted for a separate burglary in 1935 in Greenwood. The man's brother was located and confessed to shooting Marshal Kilgore after the cast matched his teeth. The man was convicted of Marshal Kilgore's murder, sentenced to death, and executed in 1936.
Marshal Kilgore had served with the Grenada Police Department for 10 years. He was survived by his wife.
