Sergeant CJ Nelson was killed when his police motorcycle was struck by a utility truck on Broadway Extension at Comfort Drive at about 3:00 pm.

The utility truck was driving northbound at a high rate of speed when it struck Sergeant Nelson's motorcycle and several vehicles that were stopped at the light. Sergeant Nelson was transported to the OU Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the truck was charged with manslaughter and second-degree murder. Preliminary blood tests showed the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine in the driver's system. The suspect died of cancer while awaiting trial.

Sergeant Nelson was one day shy of his 13-year anniversary with the Edmond Police Department and previously served with the Honolulu Police Department for two years. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, mother, stepfather, father, and brother.

In 2023, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation named the intersection of U.S. Highway 77, also known as the Broadway Extension and Comfort Drive in Edmond, the SGT Christopher James “C.J.” Nelson Memorial Intersection.

A few years back in 2019 I had lost hope in police due to so many incidents. We live in such a divided society not realizing that we exist in a single creation by a single creator. The lack of precense in that way of thinking today in 2025 is a threat to all humanity. I realize that blue black and brown and white must unite as a nation if we want to keep the freedoms that people like you sacrificed themselves for. I made mistakes and I regret all and any hatred i had for police when I was younger , as im sure the officers involved in Isaiah's killing are too regretful and think about that day a lot. May heaven accept you , to your family, Angels protect you, and to all officers who diligently risk life and limb to protect us, may trouble neglect you as nobody is immune to it.
