Patrolman Charles Buckley was shot and killed when he and his partner responded to a domestic disturbance.
As the officers spoke with the female subject, the male subject ran from the house with their child and fled in a vehicle.
Patrolman Buckley and his partner pursued the suspect through Jackson at speeds reaching 100 mph. The suspect suddenly stopped at the 3300 Block of Holmes Street, and as the patrolmen exited their car, the man opened fire with a .20 gauge shotgun. The blast struck Patrolman Buckley in the head, causing a fatal wound. Patrolman Buckley's partner shot and killed the suspect as the man reloaded his weapon.
Patrolman Buckley had served with the Jackson Police Department for only 8 months. He was survived by his expectant wife, parents, and grandmother.
