Add to My HeroesCharles Quincy Lukens
Deputy Sheriff Charles Lukens was shot and killed while attempting to serve civil papers at a home in Rosedale.
The Rosedale city marshal accompanied Deputy Lukens because the marshal knew the man. They located the man in front of a grocery store at 1637 Kansas City Avenue. The man immediately produced a revolver and started shooting at the officers, but did not strike them, before fleeing on foot towards Kansas City, Missouri.
Both officers chased the man across Turkey Creek. Deputy Lukens was able to get ahead of the man and cut him off near the Frisco railroad yards. The man again opened fire, striking Deputy Lukens in the chest. The man fled into Missouri. He was shot and killed after being located at a house at 3129 Bell Street.
Deputy Lukens had served with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office for approximately one year and had previously served as constable and a firefighter for Argentine. He was survived by his mother and brother.
