Add to My HeroesJames Maxie King
Constable James King was shot and killed while responding to assist the county sheriff and a deputy who had just been shot in Middendorf.
The sheriff and deputy were both shot as they attempted to arrest a wanted subject. The man fled into his cabin after shooting them and barricaded himself inside with the help of his wife. Despite his wounds, the sheriff was able to ride back into town and organized a posse to assist with the apprehension.
Constable King responded to the home as well. As he bent down to look underneath the porch, the man opened fire, shooting him in the head. Other members of the posse lit the house on fire in an effort to force the man outside. The subject died in the ensuing fire.
Constable King had only served with the Chesterfield County Magistrate's Office for several months. He was survived by his wife and eight children.
