Patrolman Edward Stever was shot and killed near the intersection of Buffalo Street and Main Street while attempting to question a suspicious person at approximately 1:30 am.
He had followed the man for several blocks. When he asked the man to stop the subject suddenly turned and shot him twice in the chest. Patrolman Stever was taken to a local doctor where he succumbed to his wounds several hours later.
The subject fled the scene and was never apprehended.
Patrolman Stever had only served with the Elkland Borough Police Department for three weeks. He was survived by his wife and two young children.
