Private Charles Miller was shot and killed on G Street SW, between 4th Street and 5th Street, while coming to the assistance of several Metropolitan Police Department officers who were involved in a shootout.
The Metropolitan police officers had attempted to take a man into custody for bootlegging and disorderly conduct when he shot at them. The man was apprehended and taken to a police call box at 4-1/2 Street and G Street so the officers could call for a patrol wagon. As they waited for the wagon, the man's friends appeared and shot at the officers again. The officers then exchanged shots with the group.
Private Miller, who was on duty at 3rd Street and G Street, heard the shots and rushed to the scene with other MPs. As he approached the area he was struck in the head by a round fired by the offenders. He was taken to Emergency Hospital and then transferred to Walter Reed Hospital, where he died the following morning.
The suspects who shot him were never identified.
